Preparing solar, wind and battery-storage transformers for sale

How to organize surplus and retired electrical assets from renewable and storage projects.

Separate the transformer scope from the rest of the project

Solar, wind and battery storage facilities can release transformers during upgrades, repowering, equipment replacement or project closure. Gasbox reviews transformers from all three types of site, including power, substation, step-up, pad-mounted and distribution equipment.

A site inventory should identify the transformer itself and any equipment included with it. Describe associated switchgear, breakers, controls and conductors separately so the buyer can assess the actual package. Do not assume that every component on a shared skid or at the facility is included in the same purchase scope.

Use a consistent inventory for multiple units

Renewable and storage sites often have several similar units. A consistent inventory makes it easier to distinguish available assets from those remaining in service. Give each asset an identifier that can be matched to its nameplate, photographs and location on site.

  • Quantity, manufacturer, model and serial number
  • kVA/MVA and voltage ratings
  • Oil-filled or dry-type construction
  • Operational, surplus, decommissioned or damaged condition
  • Whether the unit is installed or ready for collection
  • Available test, service and oil reports

Explain the project timing

Identify which units are available now and which will be released after an outage, replacement or other site work. If collection must follow a sequence, describe that requirement at the beginning. Include the country and site location, the desired removal date and the contact responsible for coordinating access.

Keep technical disconnection and site-safety planning with the owner, operator and qualified contractors. Gasbox can assess the equipment opportunity while those requirements are being established.

Include the other electrical assets

A transformer retirement may also release switchgear, circuit breakers, CTs/PTs, disconnect switches, control cabinets, bus duct or cable. List those items with their condition and quantities instead of describing the entire project as general scrap.

Gasbox reviews both individual equipment opportunities and larger inventories. Share the equipment list as one submission so the purchase and removal scope can be considered together. We coordinate specialist removal and transport providers for the agreed work, including international logistics where required.
